This modue is not normally available to students with AS Level Maths Grade C or above.

This module is mutually exclusive with

SOEE1480Maths for Earth & Envi Scients

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

This module is designed to prepare students for further study in the environmental social and natural sciences by providing them with key mathematical abilities and knowledge.

Learning outcomes
Students will gain an understanding of key mathematical concepts and tools, to enable further study in environmental social science and some areas of the environmental sciences.


Syllabus

This module will cover several key concepts in maths. The following topics are covered:

- algebra
- equations and formulae
- logarithms and exponentials
- trigonometry
- straight-line analysis
- sequences and series
- solving coupled algebraic equations
- statistics: Probability, correlation and regression; Binomial & Poisson distributions; Intro to hypothesis testing

This will be taught through lectures (shared with SOEE1480) and coursework worksheets.

Private study

75hrs - reading course material, practising problems, solving assignments, and preparing for the final exam. One-to-one help is available at regular drop-in sessions.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The student’s progress is monitored by weekly exercise sets by providing assessed coursework every two weeks, plus regular formative assessment exercises in Minerva.
