This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- provide an overview of the theory, principles, and practice of seismic, electrical, and electromagnetic methods as applied to near-surface targets.

Syllabus

- Factors affecting current flow; resistivity, permittivity, permeability, anisotropy.
- Self potential, fixed and moving source resistivity methods.
- Quantitative solutions for layered media.
- Induced Polarisation.
- Physical basis of the electro-magnetic (EM) technique, EM and magnetotelluric surveying, GPR (ground penetrating radar methods).
- Seismic refraction travel-time distance relationships; refraction interpretation algorithms for plane-layer and undulating boundary cases; special plane-layer cases (hidden layers, velocity gradients); refraction tomography and 3D surveys as applied to static corrections; the MASW method.
