Module summary

The aim of this module is to familiarise students with the key issues relating to the history and cultural production of Brazil, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa.This module will be appropriate for students with an interest in the history, culture and society of the Portuguese-speaking world. No knowledge of Portuguese language is required as this module is taught in English.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are:
- to provide students with an overview of the history of Brazil, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa
- to provide students with knowledge of the key cultural producers from Brazil, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa
- to encourage students to reflect on ideas such as identity and culture in a historical and intercultural context
- to develop students' skills to analyse and discuss a wide range of primary and secondary sources
- to develop students' ability to craft their own arguments and use evidence to support them.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

- Demonstrate their knowledge of the history and key cultural products of Brazil, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa
- Show an awareness of the interplay between politics and culture
- Engage critically with secondary literature and its use in preparation for written work
- Demonstrate the ability to progress beyond the narrative/chronological to a more analytical and evaluative approach
- Organise and present ideas within the framework of a structured and reasonable argument.

On completion of the module students should be well placed to follow more specialised modules on history, literature and film in levels two and three.

Skills outcomes
- Critical engagement with the political, social and cultural history of a different culture
- Awareness of how historical developments continue to shape the present
- Ability to analyse a variety of source materials
- Communication skills, in speaking and writing


Syllabus

Firstly, this module will examine a number of key historical facts and key cultural products from Brazil, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa.
Secondly, students will examine the way history, language and culture has impacted on the question of 'What is Lusofonia?'.

The module syllabus will typically include a series of lectures on the following topics:
- Portugal and the Globalised World – The "Discoveries"
- The "Portuguese Commonwealth" – the politics of the CPLP (Community of the Portuguese-speaking Countries)
- Brazil: Nation and Identity
- Music and Politics in Brazil: from Samba to Funk
- Cultural Exchanges in the Portuguese-speaking world

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored via participation in seminars. Feedback on the first exam in Semester 1 will aid students in preparing for subsequent assessments and will identify any problems at an early stage.
