Module summary

The module will introduce students to the academic skills and strategies they will need to support their studies at undergraduate level. Through a combination of interactive sessions and independent (assessed) online tasks the module will provide students with the opportunity to gain and practice skills in time management, using library resources, independent research and writing, and preparing for assessment. The module will also introduce University regulations and practices and will guide students in using University Handbooks and websites as sources of essential information.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to: understand the skill requirements of undergraduate study; understand the Leeds personal tutoring system; record and reflect on their academic and personal skills (using Leeds for Life webforms); use the library and library catalogue confidently; develop a personal timetable of study; master academic referencing conventions for research; construct a bibliography; understand, explain and avoid plagiarism; understand the grade descriptors and how markers use them; make effective use of tutor feedback to improve performance.

Weeks 1: Using library resources for research.
Weeks 2: How to study and write effectively.
Weeks 3: Referencing methods and avoiding plagiarism.
Weeks 4: Assessment: What tutors are looking for.

Private study

Reading and working through essential information in the School Undergraduate Handbook, Taught Student Guide, the University's Partnership Agreement, Leeds for Life website, and Faculty of Arts Study Skills website. Practice in using Leeds for Life webforms (reflective log) to prepare for personal tutorial meetings. Research preparation for series of online exercises to be completed both within sessions and as follow-ups.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The VLE based exercises will be completed online. Each exercise will be "time-released" through the VLE with the module tutor noting student activity on each assessment task. A second run of the teaching sessions will then follow from weeks 6-9 for any students failing to successfully complete.
