Objectives

Students will explore the head and neck by careful and extensive dissection conducted in small groups. Practical work in the dissecting room will be supported by lectures and tutorials.
The goal is to provide the students with a working knowledge of the clinical anatomy of the region, focussing in particular on the most clinically relevant areas – the face, anterior and lateral neck and the inside of the skull.
The module also aims to develop the students’ dissection skills in preparation for their second semester studies. These skills include manual dexterity, planning and problem-solving.

Learning outcomes
On completing this module, students should be able to:

• Give a detailed account of the anatomy of the head and neck region, with particular emphasis on the facial and intracranial
regions and the anterior and lateral aspects of the neck.
• Explain the anatomical basis of relevant clinical conditions and procedures.
• Compare and integrate anatomical information derived from multiple diverse sources.
• Conduct a detailed anatomical examination of the head and neck region.
• Develop strategies to deal with atypical anatomy and other unexpected problems encountered during an anatomical
examination.

Skills outcomes
• Dissection and fine motor manipulation of surgical
instruments.
• Execution of an anatomical examination.
• The use of primary literature to determine the current
state of relevant anatomical knowledge.


Syllabus

Triangles and root of the neck, superficial face, scalp, interior of the skull, the parotid region, the temporal, masseteric and infra-temporal regions, the pharynx, the nasal cavity, the mouth and tongue, the palate and tonsil, the larynx and orbit. Students will also consider the organisation of the peripheral nervous system in the head and neck as well as the blood supply of the region

Private study

Independent online learning (video lectures), preparation/follow-up for each practical session, lecture/video lecture and tutorial, preparation for practical and written examinations.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student monitoring will be during dissection sessions and tutorials. The module leader will see each student once a week in dissection class and four times during the term in tutorials. All these sessions will be held in the Dissecting Room.
In both scenarios, the tutor will work with the students in small groups (typically 2 during dissection and 5 during tutorials). Both scenarios will be interrogative in nature and thus provide ample opportunities for evaluating and guiding students. In particular, the tutor will evaluate, and provide formative feedback on, each student’s dissection skills during these meetings.

The August re-sit examinations will have the same format and duration as the January first attempts. Compensation between the two assessed elements will be permitted such that each individual element will not need to be passed in order for the module to be completed successfully
