Module summary

This module introduces students to the practice and professional skills required to become a Healthcare Scientist and includes both laboratory based practical sessions and clinical placements within neurosensory healthcare science departments (e.g. audiology, neurophysiology and vision science).

Objectives

The overall aims of the module are to enable the student to achieve:
- A basic appreciation of the range of work undertaken within Healthcare Science (Neurosensory).
- The basic skills and attitudes relevant to the Healthcare Science (Neurosensory) Practitioner.

This module will provide a foundation from which the student will build their knowledge, skills, experience and attitudes throughout the three year programme of study. It is expected that this period of initial work-based training will provide the opportunity to begin to integrate and embed many of the professional practice learning outcomes and enable the student to practice safely in the workplace.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:

1. Describe the roles and the range of technologies used by Neurosensory practitioners
2. Explain a typical patient diagnosis and treatment pathway in Neurosensory practice
3. Explain the basic principles of routine assessment and rehabilitation within Neurosensory Science
4. Demonstrate basic professional skills of behaviour and communication used in the healthcare environment
5. Demonstrate and explain safe working practice
6. Discuss the need for multi-disciplinary working within Neurosensory Science
7. Recognise the role of screening programmes within Healthcare Science
