Module summary
The key concepts developed will include anatomy and physiology of major body systems in the context of the life span, as well as pathophysiology of common diseases across the body including the psychosocial aspects of health and disease. Achievement of each learning outcome provides the building blocks for the division- and specialism-specific learning to follow, ensuring a common starting point for all students. Objectives
The overall objective of this module is provide students with the underpinning biological and scientific knowledge regarding body systems and common diseases required for the practice of healthcare science in the area of the physiological sciences.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of a range of major body systems in the context of the life span
- Understand the basic concepts of health
- Describe the pathophysiology of common diseases across the body systems
- Discuss the pathophysiology of common diseases relevant to Cardiac Physiology and Audiology.
Skills outcomes
Audiological and Cardiac physiological changes related to ageing
Pathophysiology of common diseases and their links to cardiac and audiological disorders.
Syllabus
The following topics areas will be addressed: introduction to the concepts of health; the anatomy and physiology of the skin, skeletal, cardiovascular (including blood and the lymphatic system), renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, urinary and reproductive systems, as applied to the lifespan, will be considered at an introductory level. Pathophysiological processes related to common diseases associated with the major body systems will be introduced with a focus on those relevant to the fields of cardiac physiology and audiology.

Private study
Students will complete an on-line (MINERVA based) tutorial on histology. There will also be worksheets to complete throughout the semester (approximately 1 every 2 weeks) which will cover and expand on material discussed during lectures. Students will also be provided with example exam questions throughout the semester covering topics covered during the lectures - a minimum of 3 questions per topic will be provided along with model answers. This will facilitate students and staff in monitoring student progress and also help them prepare for their summative assessment. The remainder of the private study time will be used to engage with the lecture material, including completing recommended and further reading, and prepare for the assessments.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will be able to self-assess progress via the provision of model answers regarding the completion of worksheets and example exam questions. Methods of assessment
