Pre-requisite qualifications

Certified evidence of the ability to study at M level for example SLiP, and masters level modules. Undergraduate Degree in a clinically related field, or equivalent 2:2 and above e.g. HNC/D Medical Physics & Physiological Measurement (MPPM), professional body exams such as British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) accreditation. The candidate must show on application (personal statement) or during the selection process evidence of working in a clinical setting.

Module summary

The module will provide the opportunity to apply learning to work based practice needs in echocardiography. This module provides theoretical knowledge to support practical and interpretation skill development for the use of imaging in the investigation and management of a range of diseases and conditions. Students can build their study and skill development around echocardiography which directly relates to their own working

Objectives

This module will provide a detailed understanding of the principles of echocardiography and the use of science and technology to give an appreciation of its role in patient diagnosis and treatment.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate and synthesise a detailed understanding of principles of echocardiography
2. Critically evaluate the current technologies currently utilised in echocardiography
3. Critically evaluate echocardiography imaging equipment and techniques
4. Discuss the complimentary role echocardiography plays alongside other medical imaging modalities in medical diagnosis
5. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the scientific and technological principles and processes of diagnostic ultrasound describing their relevance to the ultrasound image and the equipment utilised
6. Demonstrate proficiency in recording ultrasound images and Doppler outputs
7. Critically evaluate and debate the safety issues related to diagnostic ultrasound to enable optimal use of the equipment within the current, internationally recognised recommendations for safe practice actively reducing any hazard to patient and staff

Skills outcomes
The fundamentals of echocardiography is essential to the practice, interpretation and understanding of cardiac ultrasound, and will benefit those utilising and obtaining echocardiography images in clinical practice and research

• Critically evaluate the clinical role of echocardiography & Doppler
• Evaluate and critically appraise service provision/relationship with patients/reporting and documentation
• Critically evaluate the importance of imaging physics & instrumentation
• Evaluate and appraise Doppler physics, fluid dynamics & instrumentation
• Critically evaluate recording methods
• Demonstrate recognition of cardiac anatomy & physiology and cardiac functional parameters

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Lectures are accompanied by a number of formative questions (and answers) which students can use to gauge progress. The two tutorials also provide with opportunity for feedback on progression.
During the teaching sessions student led sessions are timetabled which require students to discuss cases of specific interest. An abstract of the case with data where possible can be uploaded onto the VLE prior to the session. The VLE will also include relevant guidance documentations, power point presentations, associated handouts and multiple choice questions and a practise workbook to facilitate independent learning.
