Module summary
Covering professional practice in relation to working as a practising artist, curator, arts writer etc.Objectives
To familiarise level 3 students with methods for developing an arts related careers. To guide them through new concepts in the curating and organising of exhibitions, grant writing, developing professional studio practice, art writing and other aspects of the professional environment within their chosen field. The module will introduce them to curators, galleries and artist initiatives through visiting tutors and field trips.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate evidence of the following:
- Time management skills
- Effective and appropriate communication skills
- Writing of statements, proposals and applications related to arts field
- A familiarity with both local and national art scene, galleries, artist initiatives.
- Analytical skills in relation to presentation and display
- An understanding of different audiences for exhibitions, art writing etc.

Syllabus
Students take part in presentations, seminars, tutorials, field trips and tasks that prepare them for a range of employment and professional practice opportunities after graduation.
Looking particularly at practising artists, curators, art writers and museums the emphasis will be on developing skills that enable them to devise, initiate, organise and implement initiatives in the arts. Visiting speakers will introduce them to a range of practices, galleries, museums in order to familiarise students with professional career pathways open to them after graduation. Field trips syllabus visit studios, galleries and other relevant art world spaces will form part of the syllabus. The students will work towards developing how their professional practice will address external funders, audience and galleries in the art world after their studies are completed.

Private study
Students will work independently to develop different aspects of professional practice around an exhibition/arts funding proposal, which they will research, develop and author in a similar procedure to a professional Grant for the Arts application to the Arts Council. They will also work individually to develop a professional presentation of their plans for the end of degree show, situating their practice in both academic and professional contexts. Students are expected alongside their scheduled field trips to independently visit art galleries and other arts events in Leeds and further afield. Independent reading based on course reading lists will be expected to feature as part of their professional development within the module.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student progress is monitored continuously through regular interaction in seminars. Students will be assessed at key points in the module through the in class presentation Verbal feedback will be given immediately after student presentations, as well as written feedback returned to students.Methods of assessment
