Objectives- to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their professional skills in the Biosciences through individual research projects;
- to expose students to the methodology and philosophy of scientific research;
- to provide experience of working in a research group and interacting with research scientists;
- to provide students with the opportunity to develop their library skills, in-depth literature searching and analysis of the scientific literature;
- to provide experience of analysis and presentation of scientific data;
- to give the opportunity for dissertation preparation and scientific writing.
On completion of this module, students should have:
- Completed an original research project demonstrating originality and diligence in an area of science appropriate to their chosen course options.
- Gained experience in experimental planning, execution and analysis including presentation of scientific data and use of appropriate computer programs.
- Prepared and submitted a dissertation in the form of a scientific paper. This dissertation should include an appropriate summary of relevant literature, an outline of aims of the project, descriptions of the methods used, details of the results obtained, conclusions drawn from these results and indications for future studies that might be undertaken. There is an expectation that material from the dissertation would be of a quality suitable to contribute to scientific publication.
- Developed skills in the appropriate and selective use of library resources, including computer based search tools such as Web of Science and Medline.
- Attended an oral examination and answered questions on the subject of the project work.
- Presented their work in poster format.
Students will undertake a high quality experimental project in a research laboratory based on a researched grant proposal on a topic agreed with the supervisor.
The subject of the project will be related to the course options completed by the student during Semesters 1 and being undertaken during semester 2. There will be regular meetings with the project supervisor, normally on a weekly basis, with a proforma record of the outcome of the meeting.
Guidance on dissertation writing will be provided and the project will be assessed by a dissertation, oral examination, the quality of practical execution and presentation of work in poster format.
