Objectives

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will
- have developed their written presentation skills, and written a piece of science journalism;
- have researched and prepared a (mock) funding application.
- understand the practice and problems of participatory ecotourism, and the role and practice of ecological consultancy.
- understand the principles and practice of emergency first aid, and risk assessment and safety planning for fieldwork.
- understand the practice of biodiversity recording and sampling in a Yorkshire context, and understand the principles of the BMWP schemes and of river corridor surveys.


Syllabus

The module will consist of lectures, workshops and tutorials covering grant-writing; experimental and census design; scientific writing; public understanding of science; participatory ecotourism; emergency first aid and fieldwork safety; ecological consultancy.

Biodiversity sampling and freshwater invertebrate surveys will be taught by lectures and field visits.

Topics to be covered may vary slightly from year to year to reflect new opportunities for training.
