Objectives

The aims of this module are to:
- provide training in basic laboratory and scientific skills;
- further develop computing skills;
- further develop transferable skills specifically: data handling, scientific report writing, critical analysis;
- provide instruction on how to prepare a curriculum vitae;
- teach and provide practice in the application of statistical tests;
- further develop an understanding of biomedical ethics.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- carry out practical exercises in order to obtain accurate data;
- use Microsoft Office software in the analysis and presentation of their work;
- write coherent accounts of experimental work in a scientific style;
- test hypotheses by use of an appropriate statistical test;
- write a succinct, comprehensive curriculum vitae.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module practical laboratory skills, data analysis skills, IT skills, communication and writing skills will have been practised and enhanced.


Syllabus

- Acquisition of practical skills within the field of biomedical sciences involving the use of specialised equipment;
- Further instruction in use of standard and scientific software applications to present results in graphs and spreadsheets;
- The acquisition of skills enabling basic statistical tests to be carried out on data (Student's t-tests, regression and correlation);
- Introduction to biomedical ethics.

Private study

2 hour - class tests, exams and assessment;
32 hours - preparation for and consolidation of practical classes: (8 x 4 hours);
4 hours - preparation of CV;
10 hours - preparation and presentation of poster;
40 hours - preparation of practical report: (2 x 20 hours);
18 hours - consolidation of lecture material: (6 x 3 hours);
24 hours - revision for MCQ assessment (2 x 12 hours);
32 hours - tutorial preparation (8 x 4 hours).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance at practical classes, tutorials and seminars will be routinely monitored. Student progress will be constantly monitored throughout the module by means of the in-course assessments allowing any students with attendance or academic problems to be easily identified thereby allowing the module leader to speak with the student concerned and provide additional learning material if appropriate.

Any absence from a practical class will attract a v-code. To remove the v-code the student must submit a lab report, based on data provided to them, by a given deadline. The lab report will be check marked to determine it has reached a pass standard. Feedback will not be provided on it.
