Objectives

At the end of the module, students should:
- have an overview of petroleum technology and its importance to society
- be familiar with a range of terminology used in petroleum engineering
- understand the concepts behind a range of exploration, drilling, production and refining techniques
- be familiar with oil economics and distribution systems
- have an appreciation of health and safety issues relevant to the petroleum industry.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be familiar with a range of aspects relating to petroleum engineering, including exploration, production and refining techniques, as well as have a knowledge of basic oil economics and an appreciation of relevant health and safety issues.


Syllabus

- Overview of petroleum technology and its importance to society.
- History of oil and gas exploration, production and refining.
- Modern techniques of exploration, drilling, reservoir engineering, production and refinery operations.
- Petroleum production statistics, products and markets, oil economics, supply systems and product applications.
- Health and safety issues relevant to the petroleum industry.
