Objectives

On completion of the module, students should be familiar with the background and industrial applications of key particulate process engineering operations including manufacturing processes, particle comminution and classification, separation and materials handling systems as used in a wide range of chemical, pharmaceutical, mineral and related operations. They should also have developed a range of skills relating to process experimental design, problem solving, data recording and analysis, team working and report writing.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students will have acquired a working knowledge of particle process engineering systems used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, minerals and related industries and will have an understanding of the theory and mathematical techniques used in the operation of such processes. They will also have developed a range of practical skills, including data gathering and analysis, report writing, team working, problem solving and identifying sources of experimental error.


Syllabus

Semester 1: Experimental - students work in teams and undertake five experiments: packed tower gas absorption, cooling tower, continuous stirred tank reactor, distillation column and fluidised bed experiments. Individual reports are submitted for each experiment, in which the data gathered are critically analysed and conclusions are drawn.

Semester 2: Manufacturing processes, theories of upstream sterilisation processes, principles of batch and continuous reactor processes of current relevance for example pharmaceutical manufacturing, downstream separation processes, particulate materials handlings, comminution and sizing - crushing and grinding equipment, particle breakage mechanisms and classification systems, storage and discharge of particulates.
