Module summary
- Fundamentals of the chemical and process industries including the role of process engineers- Introduction to medium preparations, sterilizing liquid and gas medium- Basic principles of industrial process designs: batch and continuous processes - Basic principles of improving product concentration- Basic principles of engineering plant design: process evaluation and selection, process flow diagram, material and energy balances, unit operations, heat transfer, sources of raw materials, uses.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should:- have an understanding of the basic concepts surrounding the chemical process industry including bio(pharmaceutical) technological processes, design and manufacturing;
- understand the fundamentals of science that underpin the development of bio engineering operations and plant design;
- be capable of demonstrating chemical process selection based on sound scientific and engineering data and arguments.

- Knowledge of research and development of chemical manufacture including bio product manufacture.
- Principles of mass/energy balances for complex processes with chemical reactions.
- Methodologies for designing batch and continuous bio process plants.
- Holistic understanding of chemical plant processes and technologies.
