Objectives

This module will deliver an understanding of the technologies and chemical processes used in refining of oil and gas and enable the students to solve technology-specific problems and critically address technology-comparative questions.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should:
- Have a broad knowledge of petroleum refining, natural gas processing and auxillary processes;
- Have an understanding of the process chemistry involved in each of these technologies;
- Have an understanding of the environmental issues associated with these technologies;
- Have the ability to perform technology-specific calculations for different conversion processes.

Syllabus

Introduction to refinery processes, composition of crude oil, final fuels and fuel properties.
Petroleum refining - Catalytic cracking, reforming, alkylation, hydrotreatment, isomerisation, acid gas removal, thermal cracking, blending, upgrading of residuals.
Alternative processing routes.
Gas to liquids (Fischer Tropsch), steam methane reforming, gasification.
Health and safety aspects of fuel processing operations.
