CIVE3560 Multi-modal Interchange Planning and DesignThis module is not approved as a discovery module
Module summary
This module will introduce the principles and design considerations for highway intersection and pavement. Building on knowledge of highway geometry design, students will learn to evaluate the level of service on a highway link, and develop skills in design for highway infrastructure including the main types of intersections and pavement structures. The concept of life cycle maintenance and public transport will also be explained in the module. Objectives
This module aims at:- Establishing a sound understanding of road pavement and design principles
- Providing key knowledge in design considerations of highway interchange
- Developing students' ability to apply knowledge to practice.
Learning outcomes
1. Undertake a highway intersection design task including evaluation of the level of service (LOS)
2. Consider appropriate design options for highway interchange according to site conditions and associated constraints
3. Consider appropriate design options for highway pavement according to traffic and associated constraints.
Syllabus
- Highway route choice, road capacity assessment
- Junction design (at-grade and grade separated)
- Pavement materials, traffic assessment
- Pavement design (analytical and empirical)
- Highway maintenance
- Public transport planning and design
Teaching methods
Delivery type | Number | Length hours | Student hours |
Lecture | 9 | 2.00 | 18.00 |
Seminar | 1 | 2.00 | 2.00 |
Private study hours | 80.00
Total Contact hours | 20.00
Total hours (100hr per 10 credits) | 100.00 |
Private study
- Detail private study and independent learning outside formal classes as a guide to students about what is expected from them for the module- Deepen understanding in, and expand knowledge of, the subject by additional learning using the reading list
- Complete design exercise given in class
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
The module plans to have 2-hours lecture slots. In most of the sessions, students will do in-class exercise, ask questions to the tutor, and receive feedback on their work. Methods of assessment
Coursework
Assessment type | Notes | % of formal assessment |
Report | Highway Intersection Design Report | 30.00 |
Total percentage (Assessment Coursework) | 30.00 |
Students are expected to present their design to the tutor (and other students) in a poster or PPT, as part of the assessment. This will check on the authorship, and encourage peer leaning.
Exams
Exam type | Exam duration | % of formal assessment |
Standard exam (closed essays, MCQs etc) (S2) | 2 hr 00 mins | 70.00 |
Total percentage (Assessment Exams) | 70.00 |
Normally resits will be assessed by the same methodology as the first attempt, unless otherwise stated
