- be able to generate an innovative design;
- be able to apply engineering techniques taking account of a range of commercial and industrial constraints.

Students doing research projects should:
- develop a comprehensive understanding of the scientific principles of their own specialisation;
- be aware of the developing technologies related to their own specialisation;
- be able to extract and apply data pertinent to an unfamiliar problem.

Skills outcomes
- Independent learning (promoting continuing professional development)
- Self direction and decision making
- Evaluation
- Communication
