Objectives

On completion of this module students should have developed the capabilities to:

- identify and define problems;
- critically review the relevant literature;
- collect, analyse and synthesys data;
- present information in a logical and cohesive way;
- understand the limitations of the work/problem;
- ellicit the appropriate conclusions;

- communicate through well-structured and written documents.

Learning outcomes
Many design projects may include an investigative component. For either type of project, students will demonstrate independent learning.

On completion of this module, students doing design projects should:
- possess knowledge and understanding of design processes and methodologies;
- be able to generate an innovative design;
- be able to apply engineering techniques taking account of a range of commercial and industrial constraints.

Students doing research projects should:
- develop a comprehensive understanding of the scientific principles of their own specialisation;
- be aware of the developing technologies related to their own specialisation;
- be able to extract and apply data pertinent to an unfamiliar problem.

Skills outcomes
- Independent learning (promoting continuing professional development)
- Self direction and decision making
- Evaluation
- Communication

Syllabus

Students will undertake either a design or research project related to the field of Structural Engineering. All Students make an individual submission.

The topics will be provided at the start of the year; topics can also be suggested by the Student provided a suitable academic supervisor can be found. For part-time students, the project can be related where necessary to employers' requirements.

Projects are supervised on a one-to-one basis and assessment is by written report and presentation.
