Module summary

Emphasising a blurring of distinction between art and design practices, this module introduces an understanding of drawing that shifts from an idea of manual dexterity and expression, towards process based material actions and thinking.Activities will incorporate guided and self-directed drawing processes encouraging you to question formal principles and concepts of drawing. A variety of guided investigations will allow students to question the role of drawing and how it functions for them and their practice.Referencing to historical and contemporary drawing practice will be actively promoted via discussion and visual research.

Objectives

To introduce a module that explores and questions drawing’s materiality and methodology; how do we think about drawing and how is this activity allowing each individual to challenge their own pre-conceptions and develop their approach and inquiry.

To inform imaginative/critical development by understanding drawing as a crucial activity that can underpin and support creative practice.

Learning outcomes
Use drawing as a vehicle for hypothesis, synthesis, organisation and visual enquiry.

Demonstrate knowledge about the properties of drawing media in terms of its identification, application and presentation.

Through objective critical dialogue around drawing’s idea, identify and articulate relationships between references drawn from a broad range of sources and your own drawing practice to define a personal intent and purpose.

Initiate, sustain and resolve an independent drawing project.


Syllabus

Week one to week five the module introduces a structure and strategies that emphasises the preparatory role of drawing and the function of a sketchbook/notebook.

Week six to week eleven students will self direct a drawing project on a given but flexible theme ‘Thinking is form’. They will negotiate the means, structure and material outcome of the project.

Students will examine the role of drawing as a preparatory tool and identify issues linked to the properties and limits of its process.

The sketchbook/notebook is central to the module, engendering and documenting the initial, intermediate and concluded stages of the work. The sketchbook/notebook will also be used to document the contextual relationship between source material, reference material and students work.

Examples of artists, designers and other drawing practices will be introduced as a focus for critical dialogue vis-à-vis students’ own ideas and progress.

A textual proposal will form part of the documentation and preparation for the final project. This will provide a structure for the development of initial ideas through to a material outcome.

Through visual research collect, select, record, evaluate and make visible various types of information.
Extend and develop both critically and materially your drawing process/dexterity beyond the module’s weekly teaching space.
