Module summary

The course aims to provide a basic overview of the history of design from 1900 to the present day.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are to:
- provide an historical and theoretical overview of the history of design in Western Europe, USA and other locations, from 1900 to the present day;
- introduce relevant historical, conceptual, critical and methodological tools for the analysis and discussion of design and its objects;
- represent a broad historical overview of the production of design throughout the period of study.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have provided evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate a familiarity with the history and development of design, and its objects from 1900 to the present day;
- present a structured and coherent critical analysis of an object of design
- appreciate and interpret design within the social, cultural, historical, political or other appropriate context of the relevant period.


Syllabus

The aim of the module is to provide an introduction to the styles, schools and movements in the history of design in the West from the 1900s to present day. The classification and selection of the design movement’s included in this module were chosen to reflect their cultural significance in relation to social, economic and political factors.

The module will begin by looking at the design legacy of the Victorian and Edwardian periods, encompassing their interest in the Classical and Renaissance revival, in addition to the influences from Japan and beyond Europe.

The module will also include the examination architectural styles and their influence on other design movements, for example, Arts & Crafts; Chicago School; Art Nouveau; Modernism; Futurism; Bauhaus; International Style and Italian Rationalism (M.I.R.A).

Private study

Independent online learning is facilitated by a website resource of slides, workshops and readings, which allows student to explore in more detail topics signposted in the lectures, write their notes on each lecture and gain familiarity with key concepts and ideas. Online lecture notes and analysis of readings contributes to independent learning and revision for the essay assignment.

Private study includes set reading, further reading, preparation for seminars, and preparation of one essay assignment. An essay of 2000-2500 words is presented for summative assessment.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress is monitored through attendance at lectures and seminars, examinations and assessment both formative and summative.
