Module summary

The purpose of this module is to introduce students to a range of production and research methods used in the preparation of the Level Three Dissertation proposal and document.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are to:
-provide a complete overview of the Dissertation project and process
-demonstrate all aspects of the document production process
-analyse and interrogate research processes and practices relevant to dissertation production

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have provided evidence of being able to:
- make an informed choice of topic for their independent dissertation module in level 3.
- produce a proposal and plan for the production of the dissertation
- identify a range of bibliographic sources and archival resources relevant to the production of the dissertation


Syllabus

This module takes the dissertation apart and leads the students through each stage of its production week by week. The module builds on the previous partner module Research Methods 1 and put this into practice. In addition the modules examines writing techniques, research methods and resources in the context of the research plan for dissertation production.

Private study

It is expected that the students use their independent study time to choose their dissertation topic and to develop their aim(s) and objectives. They will be given two book chapters and two journal chapters to discuss in seminars. They will be expected to consider methodologies and methods and to use the reading list provided to become aware of appropriate research literature. They will also have to write a dissertation proposal

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be asked to give formal feedback on the book chapters and journal paper discussed in seminars. They will also be offered a drop in session and can come to the lecturer at any time (by appointment) to discuss lecture content.
