Pre-requisite qualifications

Students must have a reasonable understanding of the basic concepts, principles and techniques involved in the taking of a digital photograph.

Completion of DESN 1415: Introduction to Photography is desirable, though not essential.

Students must have a digital SLR camera.

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

After studying this module students will be able to apply the knowledge gained from the study of the work of recognised photographers in several fields to influence and improve their own photographic practice.
They will have also studied the writings of photographic commentators and writers to inform their work.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
- demonstrate a familiarity with advanced concepts, competencies and techniques of (digital) photography;
- demonstrate a familiarity with the work of significant writers on photography and utilise this thinking in their own work;
- use image manipulation software to analyse and adjust their images to a very high standard;
- articulate and communicate their aesthetic and technical approach to the making of a digital image for a particular application;
- understand current issues affecting the making and distribution of the photographic image and how this affects their own practice.


Syllabus

There will be a brief study of the history of photography and parallels drawn between photography as a new technology at its invention and as a new technology in the current 'digital age'. Students will be taught advanced, technical analytical skills to be applied to digital imagery. They will also be introduced to the work of significant writers on photography and be encouraged to use these works to inform their own work. Students will also be encouraged to think how photography can be used as a tool of intellectual discovery and exploration.

Private study

Students are expected to spend their private study time in:
Research into the work of significant writers on photography;
Assembly of their own portfolio of images;
Development of a project report;
The taking of photographs for analysis and critical feedback.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will submit photographic images in weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4. They will receive formative feedback on the images from staff and fellow students. Submissions will be monitored and non-submission followed up by module staff.
