Objectives
This module builds on the knowledge and skills developed by students at Level 1. Students are encouraged to conduct individual and independent lines of research and enquiry in order that they may formulate appropriate and diverse design solutions.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate a greater individuality and independence through research, development and the design process;
- continue to develop visual ideas through the use of a wide range of media;
- demonstrate a broader appreciation of the purpose of the use of creative, technical and written skills to enhance the development and presentation of designs;
- demonstrate a perception of design within a social and cultural context;
- focus their ideas on a chosen, given or industrial area of design through project-based activity;
- formulate and argue appropriate and diverse ideas, articulate those ideas in group or individual discussions, respond to critical appraisal and constraints in an appropriate manner;
- demonstrate self-motivation, commitment and discipline.
Syllabus
Assignments undertaken in this module will include self-initiated or industrially-driven projects on an individual or team basis. Direction will be given so that students develop a theoretical perspective, critical appraisal and appreciation of research and design development.
Creative design development will include the production of visual notebooks, sketchbooks and concept boards. Design work will be enhanced by the use of CAD and students will be expected to participate effectively in group/individual critiques and will become aware of the importance of self-motivation, commitment and time management.
Emphasis will be placed on the importance and value of developing a design portfolio at Level 3; planning, practice and evaluation will help demonstrate student ability to prepare a range of appropriate design and presentation solutions.
