Objectives

This module is designed to give students the opportunity to conduct visual research in relation to their work with textile and fashion products, and will provide students with a body of visual research which will drive and sustain their final design collections in Semester 2.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- deploy accurate visual research techniques in order to analyse suitable source materials for their chosen specialism;
- apply their knowledge and understanding of visual research to support and sustain their design practice;
- demonstrate a professional approach to studio practice.

Syllabus

This studio-based module gives students the opportunity to engage with visual research in a manner which will support them in the development of their studies into the practice of textile and fashion product design.

Students will be encouraged to research information from a wide variety of sources, and engage with them in an appropriate manner. They will explore various techniques and design tools appropriate to their choice of specialism to enable them to realise their ideas; this will include the use of computer aided design.

Practical sessions double as tutorials, where staff discuss the development of student work one-on-one. Two group critiques allow students to present their ideas to their peers.

The module is assessed through the submission of a portfolio of visual research, which will form the basis of their Semester 2 design practice.
