Objectives

The module provides the opportunity for further exploration and resolution of theoretical and material concerns developed through their studies in Semester 1. Students will employ appropriate media and processes to develop their ideas through to exhibited outcomes. They will create and resolve artworks/artefacts and will identify and use appropriate references and research material.

Consideration is given to supporting works, visual and textual documentation within the Research & Analysis file. Furthermore, it will involve planning towards a presentation of their work in which conceptual and visual concerns are evidenced.
There will be an emphasis on the exhibition context, issues of curation, display and audience.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate a coherent and detailed knowledge of the relationship between subject, content and process in developing a body of art practice;
- apply their knowledge and understanding in the development of a body of visual work and associated research that consolidates an individual/independent position with a focus on resolved artworks/ artefacts;
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding of the use of visual language and associated processes that support studio practice;
- undertake critical, reflective self-appraisal and evaluation as the basis for the development and understanding of art practice;
- consider the issues pertinent to the curation and presentation of artworks/artefacts and associated visual material in an exhibition context.

Syllabus

Students will work towards an exposition of their ideas through visual works and supporting reference material including notebooks/sketchbooks and research and analysis files, extending the work undertaken in semester one.

Studio-based studies include the development of a critical interpretation of purpose and content, the resolution of technical and formal characteristics, further experimentation and facility with visual language and the continued acquisition of selected practical skills in designing and fabricating artworks/artefacts towards a focused and coherent presentation.

The scope and format of their assessed work will be discussed. Students will also undertake research culminating in an effective articulation of practical studio work and related ideas. It will document the range of research, reading, references and source material and include a dossier of selected references and a bibliography. It will also contain a Programme of Study proposal, Self Appraisal and Evaluation report that summarises and reflects upon their progress and an Artists Statement.
