Module summary
This module will examine contemporary retail strategy and operations, with a focus on the specific challenges facing global fashion retailers. Through the use of examples, case studies and guest lectures, the module will introduce students to a broad range of issues, including the internationalisation of fashion retailing, retail brand management, the global fashion supply chain, sustainability for fashion retailers and managing multi and omni-channel retailing. Students will be assessed through a combination of coursework and examination.Objectives
This module aims to provide students with a critical understanding of strategy and operations in the contemporary fashion retailing sector. In particular, the module will:- develop students’ understanding of the global supply chain for fashion products;
- develop students’ understanding of fashion retail marketing and the changing international environment;
- develop students’ understanding of the theoretical and operational practices of fashion retail management and their inter-relationships.
Learning outcomes
Students who have successfully completed the module will be able to:
- demonstrate a critical understanding of the global fashion supply chain;
- demonstrate a critical understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of global fashion retailing;
- understand the factors which can have an influence on retail strategies and processes and evaluate the means by which retail organisations can develop sustainable competitive advantage;
- demonstrate a knowledge of multi and omni-channel retailing techniques;

Private study
In order to deepen their understanding, and gain confidence to develop and articulate their own ideas, students will be expected to engage in private study.Each lecture will be supported by material available on the Blackboard VLE. This material will provide links to appropriate journal papers, books, videos and websites. Digital copies of the lectures will be also available on the VLE so that students can follow up lectures in a systematic and structured manner.
Students will be expected to discuss their ideas in lectures and seminars, allowing them to gain confidence in their own critical thinking.
It is anticipated that private study time will be structured as follows:
- Literature search and background reading: 90 hours
- Group meetings: 20 hours
- Independent research and preparation: 40 hours
- Preparation of visual, written and verbal assessed outcomes: 30 hours
- Examination revision: 40 hours
- Case study preparation: 35 hours
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student progress will be monitored through:- regular attendance at lectures and seminars (absences dealt with through the normal School channels);
- participation in lectures and seminars.
Formative feedback opportunities will be available via::
- seminar discussions;
- formative seminar presentations in week 7;
- group tutorials held within the seminar sessions (personal tutorials will be available by appointment).

If, due to unforeseen circumstances, a student is unable to participate in group work, they will be assessed through an individual report of 1500-2000 words. Students who need to resit the coursework element of the module will be given a single individual assignment of 1500-2000 words to replace the group project.
