Module summary

This module emphasises the active language skills students will need to gain a deeper understanding of China, to equip them for the workplace, for possible further study, and for lifelong engagement with China and its people generally. The practical training in this module includes speaking and listening, translating from English into Chinese, and composition in Chinese, taught in a mutually reinforcing way. Topics covered may include China's politics, economy, environment, education and other key social and cultural issues. Students will also be introduced to advanced language-learning strategies and techniques to enable them to meet the challenges of further strengthening their Chinese language skills beyond university.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to develop students' language skills to the more advanced level that is essential to their career development and future engagement with China generally, including life-long learning. Intensive training in the four language skills will address the critical issue of accuracy, particularly in the use of vocabulary and idiom, collocation, advanced grammar and syntax, and understanding the difference between spoken and written Chinese. This will ensure students use Chinese fluently in oral presentation, elegantly in composition, and faithfully and expressively in translation. Students should be able to use Chinese as a working language to complete practical tasks and express their own ideas or collective thinking in their future work and other interactions with Chinese people. The advanced language training and deeper understanding of Chinese society gained through this module will also help students better understand Chinese language material in a variety of media, which will be useful as they work on their Final Year Project.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this module, students will:
- have significantly expanded their vocabulary and other advanced language skills, and be able to deploy them correctly and fluently in different contexts;
- have a stronger awareness of the appropriate structures and styles to employ in writing various types of Chinese text in accordance with Chinese customary practice;
- be better equipped to handle unfamiliar material in Chinese;
- be able to understand Chinese media broadcasting on both general and complex issues;
- be able to use Chinese to present, communicate, and debate with confidence;
- have developed some fundamental skills for translating from English into Chinese for a wider readership in a variety of text types;
- have developed a deeper awareness of linguistic and cross-cultural differences between English and Chinese;


Syllabus

Learning in this module will be through intensive training and practical exercises in writing Chinese in different text types, reading comprehension and vocabulary building, translating from English to Chinese, listening to authentic Chinese broadcasts, giving oral presentations, and interpreting between English and Chinese on contemporary issues. Students will be expected to prepare material in advance so as to participate in interactive lectures, seminars and practical classes, to make use of online learning opportunities, and to respond to feedback.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Weekly self-assessed intensive listening exercises (using model answers).
Weekly classes give students opportunities to interpret or make oral presentations in a small group. Their performance will be monitored and comments provided by teachers and fellow students. They will get oral feedback from teachers on their grammar, vocabulary and other linguistic or stylistic usages.
Weekly compositions or translations or grammar exercises are produced, handed in, and checked by teaching staff.
