Module summary
This module aims to develop both Japanese-English and English-Japanese translation skills with a specific focus on good comprehension of Japanese texts and flexible and accurate use of Japanese language, as well as awareness of genres, audience and functions, which will enable students to use Japanese primary sources in researching essays and the masters dissertation, in line with the objectives and outcomes of the masters programmes. These advanced language skills will be assessed through a translation project and a commentary, in which students choose a text relevant to their essays on other modules and their masters dissertation.Objectives
To become aware of the different features of English and Japanese texts, and become able to translate various types of texts both from Japanese to English and English to Japanese naturally, flexibly and accurately, while taking genres, audience and functions into consideration. To use these translation skills when working with primary sources for essays and their masters level dissertation, in line with the objectives and outcomes of the masters programmes.Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students are expected to become able to translate authentic texts of different genres and topics confidently with a good understanding of the linguistic features in English and Japanese texts, and be able to use these texts as part of their masters dissertation research. The students should be also able to identify their problems and difficulties in translation and demonstrate how best to solve them considering different contextual and textual elements, in line with the methodological aspects of the masters programmes.
Syllabus
This module consists of an initial two-hour session on translation theories followed by weekly two-hour practicals which focus on Japanese-English and English-Japanese translations alternately. The Japanese-English translation class mainly focuses on developing the skills for comprehension and interpretation for different types of Japanese texts, while the English-Japanese translation class will teach how to translate into Japanese effectively with an accurate use of grammar and vocabulary, as well as appropriate level of politeness.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The examination is taken in a computer cluster or similar room. Students are allowed to use the internet, as long as they do not use any online facility which allows them to communicate with anyone else. They may bring any hard copy material they wish.
