Module summary

The aim of this module is to examine the changing role of literacy in society and in the school curriculum and to introduce new ways of understanding and researching literacy and the changing literacy landscape.

Objectives

Aim: The aim of this module is to examine the changing role of literacy in the school curriculum and to introduce new literacy studies.

The objectives of the module are to enable students to:
- examine traditional and contemporary understandings of literacy
- consider the relationships between children's literacies at home, at school and on screen.
- examine the development of primary curricula, assessment and pedagogic practices in relation to literacy
- explore the relationship between research and literacy teaching and literacy curricula
- consider how literacy teaching might evolve to meet the needs of children and young people in the twenty-first century.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will have:

- An in depth understanding of the range of international theories and debates which arise in relation to children and young people's literacy practices at home, at school and on screen
- An increased understanding of literacy teaching, curriculum and assessment
- A secure understanding of key theories in relation to literacy and curriculum

On completion of this module students should have developed skills in

- critical evaluation of relevant and recent research
- independent research into current issues in relation to literacy

Researching literacy practices

Syllabus

Lectures, reading, VLE activity and the assessment activities will be planned to address key themes, introduce research and highlight theories of learning and associated methodological approaches. Each theme will relate to the following questions and key areas of debate:

- How has the literacy landscape changed for children and young people in the 21st Century?
- How do children and young people engage and participate in literacy socially and at home?
- How do popular media and new technologies impact on children's literacies and identities?
- How has literacy been taught in the past and how is it taught now?
- Literacy or Literacies?: Understanding New, Critical, Media and Multimodal Literacies
- In what ways does contemporary research contribute new approaches to teaching literacy?
- Mind the gap: Is there too much of a distance between student and teachers' literacies?
- Can schools offer a space for diverse literacies and identities and why is this important?

Private study

Independent online learning will be led through pre-recorded online seminars and guided research.
Private study will combine online, written and video research as appropriate to prepare for lectures, seminars and assignments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be asked to submit two progress reports prior to their assignment submission which will enable the tutor to give timely and individual feedback which students can act on in their final submission.
A folder will be created in Turnitin to submit these reports and enable formative assessment.
