Module summary
This module will introduce you to the theoretical ideas underpinning the assessment of children across both primary and secondary schools. You will examine different types of assessment, e.g., verbal questioning and formal testing, and consider the effectiveness of these different types. You will examine critically the rationale for the national system of assessing children’s progress along with how the data from school assessments is used, e.g. to measure teachers’ performance.Objectives
The module focuses on:- the purpose of assessments in schools
- the different types of assessment that are used
- the national system of testing in English schools and some international comparisons
- what the assessment of pupils in schools tells us about how well different groups attain and why
Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should:
- understand the purposes of assessment
- know and understand the different types of assessments used in schools
- have a critical understanding of the national system for assessment
- know and understand why different groups of pupils have different levels of attainment
Syllabus
Indicative content:
- - the purpose of assessment in schools
- theoretical perspectives – validity and reliability
- forms of assessment - formative assessment and feedback (assessment for learning), summative assessment (testing and exams)
- the national statutory framework for assessment
- how assessment outcomes and data are used in schools, e.g., to track pupils’ progress and to identify under-performing groups
- how assessment outcomes and data are used at a national level, e.g., to make judgments on the effectiveness of schools

Private study and independent learning will be in the form of reading and examination of assessment data in preparation for sessions and in preparing the module assignment.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
