Module summaryThis module is innovative in that it requires students to develop practice based research projects from classroom learning in seminars and deliver them in practice contexts. It draws on previous successful experience of other on-going pieces of work; the Making Theatre in the Community module from the Theatre & Global Development MA programme; and the LUCAS Schools Project which has seven years' experience in working with Leeds post-graduate students in local schools.The module aims to provide students with theoretical understandings and practical skills related to the learning and teaching of Global Learning in UK primary schools. Students will, in small groups, design and carry out an agreed piece of practice-based research in a primary school, with the objective of learning how to deliver work promoting greater global awareness in a primary school context.
ObjectivesThis module aims to provide students with theoretical understandings and practical skills related to the learning and teaching of Global issues in UK primary schools.
The students will, in small groups, design and carry out an agreed piece of practice-based research in a primary school, with the objective of learning how to deliver work promoting Global Learning in primary school contexts.
- Develop in-depth understandings of the concept and practice of Global Learning
- Become familiar with the knowledge, skills and values required for effective Global Learning.
- Learn how to plan and deliver a piece of work aimed at promoting understanding of Global Learning in the primary classroom.
Analytic report writing
Twelve 3 hour seminars which will cover topics such as Global Learning, research methodology, research ethics, perceptions of the Global South, active learning methodology, research plans, intervention programmes and impact assessment.
Seven 3 hour group learning sessions in which the students will, in pairs or groups of three, identify a research question, conduct a literature review, develop a research plan, devise assessment activities, devise an intervention programme and analyse the impact of their fieldwork.
Five 3 hour sessions during which the students will, in pairs or groups of three, familiarise themselves with the school, conduct a baseline assessment, deliver an intervention programme and assess the impact of their engagement.

Private studyDuring this time students are expected to read the key materials relating to the module objectives given above. They are also expected to plan their research and develop activities to address misunderstandings and negative perceptions identified by the baseline assessment.
Opportunities for Formative FeedbackDuring the module there will be on-going monitoring of student progress in seminar sessions. Formal assessment will be through coursework:
Students are required to identify a research question to explore during their fieldwork work in schools and submit a 1200 word research plan. The research plan counts for 20% of the final mark.
Intervention Report / Presentation
Students are required to conduct assessments of pupil knowledge, understanding and perceptions, relating to their research area, prior to and following the delivery of an activity programme. The students are required to submit a 1800 word reflective report OR give a 15 minute presentation that reflects upon their engagement. The intervention report OR presentation counts for 30% of the final mark.
Students are required to submit a 3000 word final essay which use the information and data, gathered for their intervention report or presentation, to answer their research question. Students are required to analyse their results in the context of existing academic understanding in the area under investigation. This final essay will count for 50% of the final mark.
