Pre-requisite qualifications

Students registering on this module who are not registered on the MA International Educational Management must:
a) have two years' experience as an employed teacher, or
b) present a case to the module tutor, in advance of the first session, for registration based on relevant experience.

Module summary

This module is about understanding people at work and using this understanding to develop leadership practice and policy that aims to motivate staff to work towards institutional improvement. It incorporates a strong occupational psychology component and draws upon key theories of employees' attitudes to their work, as well as the module tutor's own original research and published theoretical perspectives in the fields of educational professionals' morale, job satisfaction, motivation and professional development. It aims to enhance students' awareness of how to lead and manage people effectively in order to bring out the best in them.

Objectives

On completion of the module students are expected to be familiar with, understand, and appreciate the relevance to educational leadership and management practice and policy of:

- key occupational psychology theories and theoretical perspectives, particularly those related to motivation, job satisfaction, morale and professional development;
- the concepts and processes of professional learning, professional development, and professionalisation;
- the features and characteristics of effective staff leadership and management.

Syllabus

This module focuses upon the paramount importance of leading and managing in ways that are directed towards getting the best out of staff. Knowledge and understanding of what motivates and satisfies people in the workplace, and how they develop professionally, are the bases for critically examining leadership and management practice and policy across a range of national contexts.

The module incorporates a strong theoretical dimension; theoretical perspectives are analysed and developed, particularly those related to concepts and processes.

More specifically, the concepts of and the processes involved in attaining: morale, job satisfaction, motivation, and professional development are examined.

The key issue addressed is: how may educational leaders and managers at different levels, and within different national and cultural contexts, apply research findings and theory to the development of effective practice?
