Module summary

The module is designed to equip educational leaders with knowledge and competence for managing financial and material resources in the education system. The sources of educational funding and the policies behind them are considered. The use of performance indicators, innovation, income generation, resource improvement, management information systems, and effective staff deployment are among the topics covered, with examples drawn from both the schools and higher education sectors. Key themes underpinning this module are 'efficiency', 'effectiveness' and 'value for money'.

Objectives

By the end of this programme, students should be able to:
- relate the sources of education funding to its distribution to schools and other educational institutions;
- understand the basis of education financing;
- apply that knowledge to improving the financial development of their own organisations;
- organise and control the finance of their own organisations the better to lead the provision of the curriculum and to optimise the usage of all material resources available.

Syllabus

The aim of this module is to equip educational leaders with knowledge and competence for managing financial and material resources in the education system. The sources of educational funding are considered.

The emphasis is particularly, but not solely, on resource-poor areas. Curriculum leadership, income generation and resource improvement are covered.
