Objectives

On successful completion of the module, teachers will:
-understand learning difficulties from legal, ideological, psychological and school contexts viewpoints;
-be able to describe and analyse learning and performance with specific reference to children with learning difficulties;
-be able to examine learning difficulties in the context of the curriculum and types of teaching methods;
-have a comprehensive knowledge of the theories and practice of various approaches to teaching children with learning difficulties;
-understand assessment and teaching methods in the light of Individual Educational Plans;
-have knowledge of a range of learning difficulties including: literacy, numeracy, and an overview of teaching approaches specific to these difficulties.

Syllabus

The module addresses the following themes:

- Children with learning difficulties: definitions and characteristics from studies on basic processes and classroom-based investigations.
- Approaches to identification assessment and teaching children with learning difficulties including: 'abilities' approach; behaviourist contributions to the teaching-learning process consisting of objectives, task analysis, applied behavioural analysis, precision teaching and direct instruction; cognitive strategies and processes consisting of assisting questions in a Vygotskian framework of the Zone of Proximal Development, transfer and generalisation of learning; curriculum approaches within an effective school.
- Inclusion, individual needs and children with learning difficulties.
- Literacy and mathematical difficulties and approaches to intervention.
