Module summary

This module is for students who already have a basic knowledge of the language and wish to take their Spanish to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a practical level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) while developing greater confidence and accuracy when using the language in a limited range of situations. The module also aims to stimulate students' interest in the Spanish-speaking world and deepen their knowledge and understanding of Spanish-speaking societies and some of the major cultural and linguistic differences.

Objectives

With their beginners' competence in Spanish, students taking this module should be able to build on their existing knowledge of the language and develop and extend their ability to communicate and function in Spanish.

They should also further develop their understanding of Spanish and Latin-American cultures and know how to avoid major social, cultural and linguistic faux pas when speaking Spanish and/or when in Spanish-speaking countries.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of commonly used instructions, commands and expressions in the topics covered;
- read short texts in Spanish;
- extract accurately the key information from audio and/or video material;
- handle short conversations in a familiar context;
- understand, and make themselves understood by, a proficient language speaker in specific contexts;
