Objectives
On completion of this module students should be able to:(a) understand the principles and applications of nucleic acids amplification in biosensing;
(b) understand the principles and applications of biomolecular recognition in biosensing and imaging;
(c) understand the uses and limitations of biosensing in biological samples and food;
(d) understand the opportunities offered by cutting-edge biosensing technologies for food and health;
(e) understand the principles behind GMOs and their detection in food.
Syllabus
Specificity and sensitivity in probe-target interactions; immuno-assays; hybridisation assays; the PCR reaction; sequencing technologies; label-free methods for analysis; and their applications; signal-to-noise ratio, throughput and multiplexing in analysis; limitations in food analysis; scanning probe microscopy (SPM); GMOs and their detection; Nobel Prize winners in pcr, sequencing and SPM.
