This module will introduce students to the terrorism of the Red Army Faction (RAF) and its representation in German-language cinema in the first decade of the new millennium. Students will examine the socio-political consequences of the RAF's terrorism and the group's mythic status in popular culture by looking at a series of films that engage with the legacy of left-wing terrorism from the perspective of the Berlin Republic.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- demonstrate a knowledge of the debates surrounding left-wing terrorism, its legacy and cinematic representation
- analyse a range of filmic, political, academic and journalistic texts in their cultural context.
- demonstrate a knowledge of the debates surrounding the German film industry and the films it produces.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have developed advanced analysis skills through broad secondary reading and close textual study. They should also have developed their German language skills through engagement with German-language films and texts.


Students will be introduced to the RAF's ideals and aims before moving on to consider how since 1999 filmmakers have responded to the legacy of the RAF, not least the group's appropriation by consumer pop culture.

Watching the films; reading in preparation for the seminars; preparing worksheets for the seminars; preparation for presenting research outcomes in the seminar; researching and writing the portfolio and essay.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be expected to prepare regular presentations, which will be discussed in the seminar and lead to individual feedback.
