Module summary

This module addresses the educational / awareness raising needs as identified in the National Dementia Strategy (DOH 2009). The emphasis throughout is upon the personal journey as experienced directly by those affected - persons with dementia, family members, carers and friends. It reflects the personhood work of notable theorists including Tom Kitwood and the Bradford Dementia Group. The focus upon the personal experience takes a holistic approach which is further widened to embrace the totality of one's experience including states of both struggling and coping. Students are introduced to a core theoretical base which incorporates a broad selection of research as well as personal first-person narratives. This acknowledges the status of those directly affected as "experts by experience". Student learning is facilitated through a blended learning approach providing an innovative and engaging learning environment.
