Normally completion of 120 credits of Level 2 modules within the BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult), BSc (Hons) Nursing (Child) and BSc (Hons) Nursing Mental (Health) - Apprentice route.

Module summary

This module continues to develop the apprentice's clinical competence through the completion of a summative placement and PAD/OAR documentation in developing critical thinking and decision making skills in the practice of nursing.

Objectives

This is the fifth theory and practice module within the programme which will be shared by mental health, adult and child nurses.

The purpose of this module is to develop critical thinking and decision making skills in the practice of nursing. This will include critical evaluation of concepts important in contemporary nursing practice. It will explore the links between current healthcare policy, professional regulation and issues such as advocacy in practice.

A key theme of the module will be the theory and practice of leadership and management and will include team and inter professional working; risk assessment and management; conflict and change management. Apprentices will apply their knowledge and skills in written and verbal communication to more diverse healthcare and professional issues and demonstrate an ability to make and reflect on complex nursing decisions.

Research led teaching will feature within the module for example apprentices will apply critical thinking skills in order to analyse and evaluate arguments in published work or arguments made as part of everyday discourse.

Apprentices will continue to develop the skills to critically examine scholarship development and theoretical and practical questions in contemporary healthcare. Content will enable apprentices to meet generic competencies and work towards the essential skills required at level 3 and will also continue to develop concepts that are specific to their field of practice.

The leadership, management and critical thinking skills will enable apprentices to move beyond analysis of current practice and consider how areas for future practice developments could be achieved. The implementation of new thinking on and from practice will be explored to determine innovative ways of practicing and working.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the apprentices will:

Professional Values
- Demonstrate ability to practice in accordance with the recognised professional, ethical and legal frameworks that guide nursing practice, recognising own limitations

Nursing Practice and Decision Making
- Demonstrate competence in a proportion (approximately 2/3rds) of the NMC competencies, elements and skills log required for entry on to the professional register. Work towards evidence of achievement of EU directives.
- Critically appraise the principles of systematic approaches to care, and explain how evidence can be used to inform decision making in clinical care to meet essential physical and mental health needs for service users and carers.
- Apply critical thinking skills in order to analyse and evaluate arguments in published work or arguments made as part of everyday discourse
- Critically appraise different theories of clinical decision making applied to nursing practice
- Demonstrate an ability to make and reflect on complex nursing decisions
- Critically appraise contemporary issues and/or policies that influence care management

Communication and Interpersonal Skills
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in challenging situations

Leadership, Management and Team Working
- Critically analyse the concepts of leadership and management in healthcare
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a member of the multi professional team within a range of clinical settings

Skills outcomes
Advanced communication skills, knowledge and skills related to field-specific acute and complex situations, leadership.


Syllabus

While apprentices will be exposed to some taught contact time and clinical skills practice within the classroom much of the content and learning for this module will be achieved through clinical practice placements.

Generic
The themes covered in the module are generic in nature however discussions will focus upon field specific issues in practice such as:
- The influence of ethical practice, current legislation, healthcare policy, and professional regulation on nursing practice
- Advocacy
- Clinical decision making theory and skills
- Theory and practice of leadership and management including team and inter professional working; risk assessment and management; conflict management; managing change; communication.
- The responsibilities of the qualified nurse with respect to record keeping and data protection; safeguarding service users and carers; risk assessment and management; quality assurance mechanisms in healthcare settings
- Critical thinking skills
- Demonstrate emotional intelligence in the management of self and others
- Grief, loss and breaking 'bad news' will form the basis of skills sessions
- Inter professional conference day with medical students

Review practice requirements, assessment, documentation and the EU directives for year 3 of the programme

Adult and child nurses will be exposed to a variety of acute and critical care areas and community placements where they will continue to collect portfolio evidence towards achievement of the EU directives e.g. community care will expose learners to home care and older adult issues and Accident and Emergency will offer opportunities for maternity, paediatric, mental health care etc.

There will be no more than 20 hours of simulated practice which will include leadership and management scenarios and inter professional real /simulated patient workshops and field specific simulated practice sessions to develop skills in psychodynamic, integrative and group approaches to complex care.

Mental Health
Apprentices will focus on challenging inequality, promoting safety and positive risk taking and making a difference to the lives of people with mental health issues (10 ESC, DH, 2004). Engagement in Clinical Supervision will be ongoing.

Mental health nurses will be exposed to acute and forensic care placements where they will continue to collect portfolio evidence towards achievement of the EU directives for example, learning disability, older adult working.

Private study

The apprentices will be provided with learning resources to support taught sessions. All resources and reading lists will be accessed via the VLE.

Apprentices will be directed to guided study, the philosophy will be to create an environment of blended learning.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Apprentices will be monitored through the practice assessment documents. They will normally be expected to achieve approximately 2/3rds of the stage three NMC competencies, elements and skills log by the end of the placement. Assessment will occur at the end of the placement. Apprentices will receive guidance on which elements they must achieve in the placement and mentor/apprentice will evaluate the apprentice’s progression throughout the placement. An action plan will be developed to ensure that the outcomes are achieved or carried forward to the final placement.

Reflection on practice tutorial groups will enable scope for feedback on clinical placement issues and making links between the theoretical learning and application to practice.

Apprentices will be provided with formative feedback related to their engagement and input during tutorial sessions. Academic support will be provided for the written component in accordance with the School of Healthcare's guidelines for Academic Support and Feedback.

There is no compensation between the practice assessment and theoretical assignment. The assessment of this module incorporates theoretical assessment and assessment of practice to comply with the NMC requirements
