Objectives
Contemporary health and social care raises ethical issues in practice for the individual, as a member of a team and in interactions with service users and carers. Within this context, the object of this module is for participants to analyse ethical dilemmas and decision making.Learning outcomes
By the end of the module the student will be able to:
- demonstrate comprehensive understanding and application of a variety of ethical theories and principles;
- critically and creatively evaluate contemporary ethical issues in health and social care;
- to exhibit mastery in ethical decision making;
- demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the complexities of ethical practice.

Syllabus
- Ethical theory and principles e.g. virtue ethics, consequentialist theories, feminist theories.
- Contemporary ethical issues e.g. stem cell technologies, assisted dying, organ and tissue donation, resource allocation.
- Ethical practice e.g. professional boundaries, coercion, service user and professional autonomy.
- Ethical decision making.
- Ethical conduct in research.

Students will be expected to work independently on PBL scenarios to enable them to engage in the process of decision making.Online resources will be developed to support independent learning.

Preparation for participation in discussion following each assessed presentation; Each student will be required to deliver an oral presentation focusing on an ethical issue in contemporary healthcare and lead a discussion on the subject matter. 30 minutes will be allowed for both the presentation and the discussion. The focus of the presentation must be submitted by week 6 of the module to allow all students to prepare to participate in the plenary discussion with each presentation. Compensation will be allowed between elements.
