Registration on to Professional Doctorate in Health and Social Care; OR a first degree (minimum 2.1)

Objectives

This module is an introduction to the principles of theory and practice of approaches to qualitative research inquiry and methodology.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate:
1. critical awareness of differing approaches to qualitative research;
2. critical insight into ways of investigating human behaviour, interaction and associated phenomena;
3. critical awareness of structuring models of qualitative inquiry.

Skills outcomes
- Critical observation, interviewing and focus group management
- Critical appraisal of qualitative research papers and associated data.

- principles and practicalities of 'doing' qualitative research
- observation and interviewing in qualitative research
- the use of case studies and focus groups
- critical appraisal of qualitative research papers
- analysis of qualitative data
- ethical issues

Private study

Students will undertake prepared reading prior to seminars and will prepare appropriate material from module-based workshop activities for discussion in seminars.
