Objectives
The objectives of this module are:- to develop a workable research question; undertake a relevant literature search;
- to plan the research and a coherent and logical essay structure;
- to write a substantial essay displaying critical analysis.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
- demonstrate the development of a deeper understanding of a particular legal topic through independent research and the preparation of an extended piece of writing;
- practice research skills, including the skills of accessing and retrieving relevant information, analysing and criticising information and presenting and communicating effectively the product of independent research;
- formulate a focused and workable research question;
- undertake sustained independent research relevant to their research question;
- demonstrate, through the writing of their dissertation, a critical awareness and understanding of the position and role of law within one or more of its social, economic, political, policy, historical, philosophical, moral, ethical or cultural contexts.
Syllabus
The module involves the writing of a dissertation on a selected legal topic. The dissertation must be no more than 12,000 words, plus a 250 word abstract. The abstract must be no more than 250 words. The OSCOLA referencing system must be used. In calculating the length of the dissertation no account shall be taken of footnotes, the title page, the table of contents, the table of cases and statutes, the abstract, necessary appendices and the bibliography. All other material is included in the word count.
Students are required to present a proposal for a dissertation title by the end of the fourth week after the Easter vacation of the student's second year. The proposal must be approved by the course co-ordinator who will allocate the student to a supervisor.
The completed dissertation must be submitted by the end of the first week after the Easter vacation of the student's third year.

Detailed literature survey. Development of dissertation structure. Submission of materials to tutor throughout the academic year as requested.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Supervision of research and writing by the student's supervisor. Students are entitled up to 10 hours of supervisor time, including at least 2 hour face-to-face. Post meeting reports are completed by the tutor.Methods of assessment
