Module summary

This module is designed to enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of teams and how different styles of leadership affect the experience and outcomes through participating in a variety of outdoor adventurous activities and team building games. Students will have the opportunity to lead and to observe others in leadership positions.Designated a Special Skills module, this module is open to students in all degree programmes. Objectives

Students will gain the knowledge of leadership styles, an understanding of teams and be able to relate these to participation in adventurous outdoor activities.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should;
- Explain the role and practices of a competent outdoor leader;
- Describe the individual responsibilities of participation in adventure sports;
- Demonstrate an ability to participate safely in various adventurous activities;
- Evaluate historical and current leadership theories such as Belbin's Team Roles, Lewin's Leadership Styles, the 'Comfort, Stretch, Panic' model and others.

Skills outcomes
By taking this module students will develop skills in and understanding of: -
- Teams and team role
- Leadership styles

Private study

Preparation and analysis of practicals & residential (15 hrs);
Evaluation & reflection including completing a weekly reflective log (25 hrs);
Group Presentation (15 hrs).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance at lectures and practical sessions.
Registers of attendance at practical classes and lectures will be kept, with absences followed up by the module manager.
Tutorials available throughout the module by appointment.
Direct feedback from participation in Practicals and Residential.
