Module summary

This is an opportunity to explore the principles of rehabilitation along with the key skills and attributes required to operate as a supporting specialist to performance sport. This module will cover the foundation of supporting and rehabilitating the injured athlete.A key component of the module is to experience practical techniques used for rehabilitation and practice in producing a plan for rehabilitation of an injured athlete. The module also provides a great insight into the practice of working as a strength and conditioning coach alongside a physiotherapist within performance sport support service.Information about the full portfolio of LEED discovery modules can be found at https://sport.leeds.ac.uk/modules/

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Assist students with developing a foundational understanding of sports injuries and their treatment;
- Provide students with an opportunity to learn the basics of evidence-based practice when supporting an athlete through the rehabilitation process;
- To provide students with an opportunity to understand the role played by strength and conditioning coaches, supported by physiotherapists when working with an injured athlete.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
- Identify and analyse a range of different sports injuries and their associated diagnostic tests;
- Display a knowledge of acute and sub-acute treatment techniques for a range of sports injuries;
- Describe evidence-based treatment plans for an injured athlete and evaluate their efficacy;
- Identify and analyse different techniques used to restore mobility, stability and function following an injury and apply them to a rehabilitating athlete;
- Apply evidence based practice through the construction of an evidence-based training plan, to facilitate the return to play process for an injured athlete.

- Identifying sports injuries and diagnostic tests;
- Develop knowledge of acute and sub-acute treatments of sport injuries;
- Understand evidence based treatments for sport injuries;
- Understanding and assessing functional movement;
- Restoring mobility, stability and function to an injured athlete;
- Creating an evidence-based training plan to enable return to play.

Private study

Research for lectures & practical’s (Directed reading towards specific injuries, anatomy and treatment methods) (35 hrs);
Planning & research for case study assignment (24 hrs);
Planning & research for training plan assignment (20 hrs).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Throughout lectures and practicals the session lead will plan activities and challenges that present formative feedback opportunities.
These will include strategies such as:
- Practical session with peer and teacher feedback;
- Conditioned situations aimed at testing knowledge;
- One to one discussions in tutorials.

Bi-weekly meeting with staff.
Bi-weekly written report showing meeting minutes, plans, progress and action points.
