Module summary

The development of practical leadership skills is vital in the world of graduate employability. This module will provide students with a range of opportunities to test their leadership credentials in a practical setting. Students will practically apply and assess their leadership skill and learn how effective leaders operate. Students will analyse and critically reflect upon their skill base and action plan as to how they may improve upon identified skills.Information about the full portfolio of LEED discovery modules can be found at https://sport.leeds.ac.uk/modules/

Objectives

The module aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of leadership through theoretical learning and practical leadership experience.
The module will focus on a range of leadership research and how that is applied in real life settings. The students will:
- Study a range of leadership theories
- Reflect on their skill base and how they work in teams
- Develop their reflective practice and understand what effective leadership looks like
- Apply their leadership skills in a range of different settings and environments including a field trip

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Critically evaluate personal leadership skills, abilities and values
- Compare and contrast leadership theories
- Evaluate the application of leadership theories in an applied setting
- Discuss personal strengths and weaknesses and evaluate the impact on those on graduate attributes
- Outline and discuss an action plan designed to develop personal skills and attributes

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Bi-weekly meeting with staff.

Throughout lectures, seminars and practical field work the session lead will plan activities and challenges that present formative feedback opportunities. These will include strategies such as:
- practical session with peer and teacher feedback
- conditioned situation aimed at testing knowledge and skills
- one-to-one and group discussions in seminars and tutorials
