Module summary

In this module , students produce a sustained piece of writing that reflects original research of their own design in the field of linguistic study. This involves designing a study, situating it in the existing field, defending its methodology, and explaining its results. The module supports students’ work through feedback on initial dissertation plans, general guidance and one-to-one supervision by an academic member of staff.

Objectives

This module aims to support students to produce a sustained piece of writing that reflects original research in the field of linguistic study. It does this through guidance provided to all students as well as one-to-one supervision.

Learning outcomes
On the completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. undertake a research project appropriate to Masters level, in the course of which they will demonstrate that they can formulate research questions
2. gather and analyse linguistic data using methods from an area of linguistics or phonetics appropriate to their topic
3. show that they can appropriately apply the planning and research skills acquired in module LING5480M Research Methods in Linguistics
4. show that they have developed writing skills appropriate for an extended piece of academic writing
5. work in conjunction with a supervisor

Syllabus

Students are encouraged during this module’s pre-requisite module, LING5480M Research Methods in Linguistics, to develop their ideas about topics in conjunction with available members of staff. At the start of this module, they present their initial dissertation plans. Students are then assigned a supervisor, with whom they plan a schedule for the completion of the work. Supervisors also provide guidance on reading and methodology. Individual supervision sessions take place as required, typically totalling around 5 hours.

Private study

Nearly all the work required of students for this module is to be done independently, supported by one-to-one supervision. Students are expected to spend approximately 8 hours preparing for their initial dissertation plan presentations. They then plan a schedule for the completion of the work with their supervisor, which allows them to break down the estimated 280 hours of work required in a way that is appropriate for their projects.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students receive formative feedback on their initial dissertation plan presentations. Subsequently, supervisors monitor their supervisees’ progress, and supervision meetings provide the main forum for formative feedback. Specific sections of writing may be commented on for content and criticality.
