Module summary

This module consists of a combination of skills and content based learning. You will be introduced to key personal transferrable and academic skills during this course. In order to complement the skills based learning, you will be studying content in relation to some of the foundational credal beliefs found within the Abrahamic faiths. You will also gain an understanding of the history, and the diversity of traditions and cultures within the three religions. The content based aspect of the module will provide a foundation for the semester 2 module, Key Texts in Middle Eastern Religions.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to equip students with the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required for study at level 1, and to develop existing core skills allowing students to become independent learners.
This module will also provide a basic understanding of key doctrines found in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Students will gain an understanding of the history, and the diversity of traditions and cultures.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Develop academic reading, writing and essay planning strategies.
- Develop competencies in time management and organisational skills.
- Evaluate and reflect on learning strategies and academic skills to identify actions for improvement.
- Evaluate and use appropriate digital learning tools effectively.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the theological issues affiliated with the Abrahamic traditions.
- Evaluate the historical and cultural traditions within Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
- Identify the common themes between the Abrahamic traditions.


Syllabus

The module consists of a combination of skills and content based learning.
The skills covers areas such as time management, reading strategies, essay planning, referencing and how to prepare for exams.
This module will look at understandings of God and of monotheism in the Abrahamic traditions. We will also be examining the role of Abraham in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and the potential for dialogue and mutual understanding between the followers of the three religions.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The student's progression will be monitored through their participation in seminar’s discussions and debates. Also, students will receive formal feedback on the first blog submitted during the course electronically via Turnitin.
The essay draft will give the student the opportunity to start thinking and preparing for their essay.
The essay feedback will be provided also via Turnitin through the VLE. Students will receive constructive written feedback complete with annotations providing guidance with the aim of making improvements going forward.
