Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an awareness of learning within psychological, social and environmental constraints
- demonstrate an understanding of learning as a complex activity
- demonstrate a basic understanding of the relationship between the nature of learning and the process of teaching.

Learning outcomes
1. Identify a range of theories of learning & teaching
2. Demonstrate an understanding of learning as a complex activity
3. Demonstrate an understanding of psychological, social and environmental factors which affect learning
4. Apply theories to own experience and in relation to different learners and contexts


Syllabus

This module aims to challenge students' perceptions of learning, in a range of formal and non-formal settings, developing an initial understanding of its complexities and the implications for lifelong education. It will do this through a variety of methods including detailed observation, group discussions, lectures and seminars.

Students will be made aware of some of the ongoing debates about learning and will be required to explore different perspectives and approaches.

- Introduction to theories of learning
- Motivation to Learn
- Key influences on learning
- The social world of the learner
