Objectives

The purpose of the module is to provide students with a critical appreciation of:
- social and political issues influencing the development of a personal and professional educational philosophy;
- the implications of these issues for professional practice at both the personal and institutional level.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Explore ethical principles and dilemmas in educational settings,
2. Identify a range of alternative models of learning & teaching, reflecting different philosophies of education;
3. Debate and critique professional codes of practice;
4.Consider equality and diversity issues and implications for practice;
5. Compare cultural practices in the perception and provision of education.

Skills outcomes
Flexibility in appreciating a range of perspectives, evaluation of different viewpoints, decision-making and prioritising, research skills.


Syllabus

The content will cover such areas as:

Developing philosophical and ethical understandings of the learning context and the frameworks that guide professional procedures and practices; exploring diversity in education at local and international levels; examining approaches to promoting equality and recognising diversity in the organisation and delivery of the curriculum. Exploring alternative models of education

Private study

Students will be expected to actively participate in sessions to explore issues in relation to their current educational context and promote the development of their own learning and teaching philosophy. Students will also be required to undertake follow-up research in relation to the topics covered.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module via student engagement in each taught session and via the tutorials for the assignments. Access to tutors is also available via email.
