Module summary

This module is designed to complement academic study on your programme by exploring how theory translates into management practice and personal development. The module will focus on developing your practice of management, team working, academic study and self-development. The emphasis will be on practical skills, informed by seminal and current academic thinking on management. Delivery will take place across two semesters to ensure that the issues raised inform all of your activities on the programme as a whole and support your personal development. The module will involve a number of practical individual and team activities around the core areas of study and will draw on input from a variety of sources, including academic and external experts.

Objectives

This module aims to enable students to develop their academic potential, employability, global and cultural insight and ethical awareness in order to enhance their potential to benefit business and society. It is designed to complement the academic study on the programme by providing the time and space to think about the practical application of management knowledge, and supports the development of team working, academic skills and self-reflection.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to critically evaluate:
- Management development
- Ethical and responsible management
- Teams and team leadership; including working in multicultural groups.


Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Work effectively in multicultural / multinational teams to address management challenges
- Develop a plan to engage with the employment market
- Exhibit greater self-awareness and global and cultural insight
- Construct appropriate learning strategies for their future personal development initiatives including critical assessment of personal and interpersonal strengths and areas for improvement



Syllabus

The practice and theory of management is a dynamic topic and this module will reflect the nature of this evolving field.

As an indicative syllabus, topics may include:
- Academic skills management
- Assessment of personal strengths and areas for improvement
- Management and leadership, including setting and achieving goals through managing others whist being sensitive to issues of ethical and responsible management practice and the challenges of managing in a multicultural environment?
- Employability: considering skills to identify appropriate jobs, and compete in the job market

The teaching sessions will each consist of a mixture of lecturing, break out activities driven by students or staff, role playing, seminar study discussion, quizzing and other factors enabled by the intense time allocation to the subject

Much of the private / independent study will be taken up with review of online materials, group working and practical assignments.
